"Help Bossses get richer on the backs of the workers" bill H-3305, Secret Ballot in Union Elections passed subcommittee and will now go to the full Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, 2/17, for a vote.
Tell your legislator to vote NO on H-3305. The bill proposes a state constitutional amendment to make union elections only by secret ballot. The history of secret ballot elections for union certification is tilted greatly in favor of business. Currently the process of getting a union certified can take years and regularly sees union supporters fired. The federal Employee's Free Choice Act would allow a majority of workers to certify a union by signing a card, or they can opt for a secret ballot -- the choice is up to the workers. A report by the Institute for Policy Study found that the gap between the pay of corporate executives and the pay of workers has grown tenfold in the United States during the past two decades. While the CEOs of major corporations made an average of 42 times the pay of an average worker in 1980, today the top bosses make a staggering 419 times the average pay. Less than 4 percent of the workers in SC are in unions. With real wages plummeting and bosses salaries at world records, it's time to level the playing field for the workers -- not make it harder for them to organize.
