George Bush likes to send other people's children all over the world to fight his wars. He likes to make statements praising the military. But what did Bush do when he had an opportunity to serve in the military?

{IMAGE1}On May 1, George W. Bush swaggered onto the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln from the co-pilot's seat of an S-3B Viking jet to announce the end of combat in Iraq. Wearing a flight suit, he bragged to the press, “Yes, I flew it myself.” Bush certainly has experience flying military planes, but not as much as he should. In 1972 and 1973, Bush was absent without leave from his duties to the National Guard.

The story begins in 1968 when Bush mysteriously jumped to the top of a long waiting list to join the Texas Air National Guard despite mediocre scores on his pilot-aptitude test. This allowed the son of Congressman George Herbert Walker Bush to avoid being drafted into combat duty in Vietnam.

For over three years the young Bush flew planes on the weekend. By all accounts, he was a good pilot. But in May of 1972 Bush moved to Alabama to work on the Senate campaign of family friend William Blount. From this point on he completely neglected his duties to the National Guard that he had sworn to fulfill until the middle of 1973. Bush's final officer-efficiency report from May 1973 noted only that supervisors hadn't seen him or heard from him. Bush blew off an entire year of Guard duty!

Through his actions, Bush committed the serious military offense of Desertion. Although most Americans in his position could expect to receive a punishment of dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for 5 years, Bush was never punished for his crimes against America. Now this deserter has the power to send young American men and women to fight, kill and die anywhere in the world.
