While starting aggressive wars overseas that put us all in danger, the president neglects our true security needs.
![]() As was the case in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, those who are most needed immediately after a terrorist attack are the first responders: the police and fire departments. In March of 2002 Bush claimed that he was “dealing with first-time responders to make sure they’ve got what’s needed to be able to respond” by proposing 3.5 billion dollars in new money. In actually his budget tried to cut more than 1 billion dollars out of existing grants to local police and fire departments for terrorism readiness. Bush’s shenanigans prompted the President of the Virginia firefighters association to say that “The president has merely been using firefighters and their families for one big photo opportunity.” In June of 2002 Bush said to the American public “We're working hard to make sure your job is easier, that the port is safer. The Customs Service is working with overseas ports and shippers to improve its knowledge of container shipments, assessing risk so that we have a better feel of who we ought to look at, what we ought to worry about.” The president was touting the Container Security Initiative for port safety. Yet two months later the president vetoed all 39 million dollars needed to impliment this initiative. In additions, the President’s 2003 and 2004 budget provides zero dollars for port security grants. The President lies when he claims that he is interested in protecting the public from terrorism. When it comes to delivering the resources needed for the people on the ground to do their job and protect the public, Bush is nowhere to be found
