May 30: Invitation to Reprocessing/GNEP Forum
Written by Gerald Rudolph
Thursday, 08 May 2008
You are invited to a very special public presentation on...

The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP)
"Recycling" Nuclear Waste and What It Means to South Carolina

Where:

Green Quad Learning Center, 1216  Wheat St., Bldg D, USC, Columbia

When:
Friday, May 30, 7:30 p.m.

Why:

In the wake of the proposed "nuclear renaissance" is the unresolved issue of the enormous quantities of high- and low-level radioactive waste created by nuclear power plants. South Carolina is being considered as the site for the (GNEP) reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, misnamed as "recycling". What will this mean to our state? Will our highways be used as transportation routes for this dangerous waste?   Is reprocessing, which produces a host of new radioactive waste steams, really recycling? What is the status of Yucca Mountain? Will it open? Will SC be the dumping ground for a new generation of nuclear waste?

Action Alert: PayDay Lending
Written by Gerald Rudolph
Thursday, 17 April 2008
From Dr. John Ruoff, SC Fair Share:

All House members need to hear from their constituents on reforming payday lending. The message should be: "Pass the Senate version of payday lending reform. Break the cycle of debt and don't allow these lenders to lend more than a borrower can reasonably pay back when the loan comes due."

Special efforts are needed with subcommittee members (Reps. Nikki Haley, Phil Owens, Joan Brady, Grady Brown, David Mack and Bill Bowers) and members of the House Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee (http://www.scstatehouse.net/html-pages/housecommlst.html#lab).

Contact for all House members is at: http://www.scstatehouse.net/html-pages/housebios.html.

Please let Brenda Kneece know what they tell you.

Tuesdays: Become an Environmental Lobbyist for a Day with the Conservation Voters of South Carolina
Written by Thomas Chandler
Tuesday, 22 January 2008
Every Tuesday, 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM
Nickelodeon Theatre on Main St.

If you see yourself as more than a spectator in politics, this great introduction to lobbying can open the door to political action. Legislative goals for the 2008 session include investment in renewable energy and efficient technology, green building standards, fair annexation laws, funding land conservation, and protecting water quality.

Come on any Tuesday that fits your schedule, and we will guide you through the day's events so you can complement the work of the conservation lobbyists - observing the session, speaking to representatives and senators, attending hearings, and helping reinforce the community's message.

For more information on the Conservation Lobby Day, contact Debbie Parker (803-799-0716) or visit http://www.conservationvotersofsc.org .

May 23-29: "Chicago 10"
Written by Melanie Knight
Monday, 05 May 2008
Showtimes nightly at 6:00 & 8:15; (3:00 matinee Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday) at the Nickelodeon, corner of Main and Pendleton Sts.

As one of the seminal political events of the 1960s, the Chicago Seven trial seems to come from another era, but filmmaker Brett Morgan, in his third return to the Sundance Film Festival, has created a film that is much more than a look back...

The title is drawn from a quote by Jerry Rubin, who said, "Anyone who calls us the Chicago Seven is a racist. Because you're discrediting Bobby Seale. You can call us the Chicago Eight, but really we're the Chicago Ten, because our two lawyers went down with us."

June 9: "Uncounted"
Written by Melanie Knight
Monday, 05 May 2008
Showtime at 7:00 at the Nickelodeon, corner of Main and Pendleton Sts.

UNCOUNTED is an explosive new documentary that shows how the election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even greater fraud in 2006 - and now looms as an unbridled threat to the outcome of the 2008 election.  This controversial feature-length film by Emmy award-winning director David Earnhardt examines in factual, logical, and yet startling terms how easy it is to change election outcomes and undermine election integrity across the U.S. Noted computer programmers, statisticians, journalists, and experienced election officials provide the irrefutable proof...

Report from Wheels of Justice
Written by Mazin Qumsiyeh
Thursday, 17 April 2008
Routers reporter killed
Faddel Ouda Shana'a, a local cameraman who works for Reuters Television, was killed on Wednesday
In the past 24 hours, Israeli occupation forces massacred 21 Palestinians including six children and a cameraman for Reuters. In the same period Israeli forces also attacked and damaged El Wafa Medical Rehabilitation Hospital and the damage does cause conditions that endanger lives (e.g. damaging power and essential medical equipement that cannot be replaced due to the siege). Patients denied access to medical care are still dying in Gaza due to the brutal siege. Abu Mazen and others who are trying to please the Israeli government (the 800 pound Gorilla in the room) continue to claim that the fault lies with Hamas for the concentration-camp-like of the Gaza strip. But creating a concentration camp with occasional runs by US-supplied weapons to kill civilians and destroy essential infrastructure is a war crime and a crime against humanity and there are no excuses per International law.
