Latin American and African Peace Issues.  Join the organizing efforts related to Latin American and African Peace issues.  The group just returned from the School of the americans protest at Ft. Benning full of ideas for organizing in South Carolina.

Activities being planned or considered are the creation of our own puppetista troupe, Spanish classes and Spanish conversation with native speakers, Salsa dance classes, Latin Music events, speakers from Latin America, sale of goods from indigenous people from Latin America, public education events about globalization and its impact on the working poor in Latin America, and lobbying for peace initiatives in Latin America. Counter Recruitment This committee is organize to counter the recruiting of high school students for the military by our public school system. Help is needed organizing a scholarship program in the schools, speaking to classrooms and administrators, writing articles, and speaking to groups. Health and Peace This new committee is organizing to educate the public, elected officials, and candidates to office about the connections of peace and health. The connections are many and strong. They reflect direct health physical and mental impact of war on soldiers, veterans, and civilians in other countries caught in the path of war-making policies. They also include the impact on the environment by the military and the industry involved in military related production. They also include policy priorities that reduce money from services to provide for war machinery or support multinational interests in ways that impact the health of people with less power, both here and in other parts of the world. Bill of Rights Defense Committee This group recently had a major success after three years of effort in getting the Mayor and all but one City Council member to sign a resolution defending liberties threatened by portions of the Patriot Act. Currently they are working on organizing a public reading of the play Guantánamo: ‘Honor Bound to Defend Freedom’. Nuclear Issues Committee This committee addresses nuclear issues including nuclear weapons production at the Savannah River Site, and environmental issues related to nuclear waste. A dozen high-ranking retired military officers took the unusual step yesterday of signing a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee expressing "deep concern" over the nomination of White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales as attorney general, marking a rare military foray into the debate over a civilian post.
