By Mark Benjamin Salon Oct. 10, 2005 | Sometime soon the war in Iraq will claim the life of the 2,000th G.I., a gut-wrenching milestone in the bloodiest conflict for the United States since Vietnam. Reports of deaths, particularly recently, have been coming in at a frightening clip. On Oct. 6, six Marines were killed by roadside bombs in attacks near Qaim and Karmah, bringing the total of American soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to 1,951. |

An urgent plea from SC Cares: We at SC Cares have discovered several specific needs. Even though the storm has been a month gone, the need remains to provide humanely adequate care of these people, our fellow citizens. Specifically we need an organization expert to help us create a synthesized order from chaos, here in our main office. This person would serve as a sort of human information conduit. We also need case workers, positive press coverage and, of course, money. None of the staffers or volunteers are getting paid. All persons wanting to provide assistance, resources or volunteer services to help Hurricane Katrina evacuees should now call the former USC Naval Reserve Center directly at (803) 576-7201.
