Wednesday, 09 April 2008 |
Professor Brian Helmuth of the USC faculty will address the effects of climate and climate change on the physiology and ecology of marine organisms at the April 21 meeting of the Sierra Club's John Bachman Group.
Dr. Helmuth's research is designed to predict where the effects of climate change are likely to be the most severe, a method of 'ecological triage.' The goal is to locate sites that can be 'saved' through effective management (e.g. through alleviation of pollution stress or over-fishing), or to identify sites that will most likely remain healthy enough to serve as Marine Protected Areas.
The John Bachman Group meets on the third Monday every month at 7:30 PM
at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on the corner of Heyward and
Woodrow Streets in the Shandon neighborhood in Columbia. The general
public is welcome.
For those interested in having a bite to
eat prior to the meeting, a light supper will be served beginning at
6:30 PM. A small donation is requested.

Amara Camara and Toni Jones
Friday, April 18, 2008
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (corner of Woodrow and Heyward)
6:30-9:00 pm
In January 2007, thirty thousand Guineans marched in the streets of the capital city of Conakry in solidarity with trade unions to peacefully protest corruption, rising costs of food, and lack of electricity in 80 percent of Guinea households.
Master drummer Amara Camara and visiting drumming student Toni Jones of Columbia, SC, became witnesses to the inspiring events of a people rising up against oppression. Over 130 people were killed and thousands wounded by security forces in Conakry as the general populace joined the trade unions to demand economic and social justice for all citizens of Guinea.
The Carolina Peace Resource Center invites you to join us for Guinea Night in our ongoing series to raise awareness of African justice and peace issues.
Also: West African drumming group with soloist Amara Camara
Preach Jacobs, vocalist
