Sunday, 17 October 2004 |
November 20-21 – Shut down the School of the Americas, Fort Benning, Georgia – The US Army School of Americas (SOA), based in Fort Benning, Georgia, trains Latin American soldiers in combat, counter-insurgency, and counter-narcotics. Among the SOA\'s nearly 60,000 graduates are some of Latin America’s most notorious dictators such as Manuel Noriega and Omar Torrijos of Panama, Leopoldo Galtieri and Roberto Viola of Argentina, Juan Velasco Alvarado of Peru, Guillermo Rodriguez of Ecuador, and Hugo Banzer Suarez of Bolivia. Lower-level SOA graduates have participated in human rights abuses that include the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero and the El Mozote Massacre of 900 civilians. It is a terrorist training camp right here in our backyard, operated by our own government with our tax dollars.
Every year on the weekend before Thanksgiving people march in a silent funeral procession to the base, making our voice heard to commemorate the victims and say never again. It is a powerful and educational experience.
As we have done before, the CPRC is organizing the group from Columbia to go to Fort Benning, near in Columbus, GA. We will take carpools down. The march is on Sunday, the 21st, and there are activities going on all day on Saturday the 20th. Many people will be staying at a campground and others in hotels. The coordinator of the carpools is Claire Ginocchio. If you are interested in carpooling to Fort Benning, please call Claire at 864-237-1999 or email her at
