As part of its series on food and sustainability, the Green Quad and
Sustainable South present an event free and open to the public: The "Talkin' Dirt" Workshop Wednesday, October 17th, 6:00 pm, at the Green Quad's Learning Center for Sustainable Futures Please join us for a hands-on workshop on composting with Mathew Kip, Green Quad Permaculturalist. Learn what soil is, why all life depends on it, and how we're losing it faster than you can say "conventional agriculture." Then learn how to make rich soil quickly in your own backyard or even your own kitchen! We'll be building a compost pile beside the Green Quad Community Garden, demonstrating how to build soil structure fast through sheet composting, and setting up an indoor worm composting bin. Find out how to get an army of invertebrates to work for you around the clock, 365 days a year, with no vacation time. This workshop is free, and we'll also have some snacks prepared from vegetables grown on site. Upcoming events in the series include a screening and discussion of "The Real Dirt on Farmer John" (tentatively on November 12th) and roundtable on local foods. The Learning Center for Sustainable Futures is a one-story building in the middle of the Green Quad, which is located south of Wheat St between Main and Sumter. If you are traveling south down Sumter, away from the State House, you will cross Blossom and then Wheat. Continue on Sumter and look to the right to find the four yellow-tan buildings comprising the Green Quad. A walkway connects Sumter and Main Streets right before the last building. The Learning Center is the one-story building along this walkway, and the entrance is to your right between four palmetto trees. Parking is most easily available on the top level of the Sumter Street Parking Garage (as you drive down the hill on Sumter, from Blossom This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it "\> This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it u003c/a\>\u003cbr /\>\u003cbr /\>Hope to see you there!\u003cbr /\>\u003c/div\>",0] ); D(["ce"]); //-->toward Wheat, take the first driveway on your right). Some parking is also available along Sumter & Main Streets. There are also two university parking lots nearby, one on Main Street between Blossom & Wheat and the other off Sumter Street, further down the hill (south) across the creek. The mission of the USC's Green (West) Quad is to create a living and learning community which integrates sustainability into all aspects of its operations and which serves as a model and advocate for sustainability on campus and in the larger community. The Learning Center for Sustainable Futures promotes collaborative relationships among students, faculty, staff, and community members for exploring the changes required to create a sustainable society.
