University of South Carolina researchers are currently seeking adults (65 and older) for a study on improving balance and mobility.

The next round of the study will start in January 2008 and will run again for 5 weeks. The study requires dividing all enrolled participants randomly into two groups. One group starts exercising in January, the other group starts exercising later. Researchers will use the Feldenkrais Method, a slow-paced, gentle exercise method that is designed to promote efficient movements.

Participants need to be able to walk 30 feet without assistance, and are required to complete easy balance and mobility tasks during pre- and post-evaluation sessions. Participants also will be asked to complete short questionnaires.

The study includes classes from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All classes take place in the Public Health Research Center (room 305), 921 Assembly Street. Ample parking space is available. Parking permits will be provided. Individuals who desire to attend classes together with a friend or spouse will be assigned to the same group. After completing all parts of the study participants will receive gift certificates ($ 12.00) for local stores or restaurants.
