Workshop: "Making New Nuclear Weapons at SRS?" Thursday, February 7, 7 pm Carolina Peace Resource Center (CPRC, http://www.carolinapeace.org) 2065 Blossom St., in Five Points Columbia, SC Introduction to DOE's "Complex Tranformation" (Bombplex) plan in preparation for upcoming hearings on Feb. 21 in N. Augusta, SC With Tom Clements, Friends of the Earth, 803-240-7268 The Dept. of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration has released its draft plan to revitalize the nuclear weapons complex at 8 locations across the country, including the Savannah River Site(SRS) right here in South Carolina. The DOE calls the plan “Complex Transformation” (formerly “Complex 2030”). We call it the “Bombplex.” Efforts must be focused on clean-up at SRS, not expensive projects to revive the nuclear arms race. DOE calls the high-level waste at SRS the “the single greatest environmental risk to South Carolina” yet DOE's new plan jeopardizes funding to deal with this risk.
