Stanley Rich, Distinguished Professor Emerita of English at USC Aiken, will talk about his May 2007 trip to Iran. The talk is timely following the March 11 announcement of the resignation of Admiral William Fallon, head of U.S. Central Command, over his opposition to the administration's push for war with Iran. The presentation will include time for discussion of the tense and conflicted relationship between Iran and the USA. Click iranflyer to download a flyer as a .pdf The trip, sponsored by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the nation's oldest peace and nonviolence organization (1915), included sixteen people who served as "citizen diplomats" who travelled for two weeks in Iran. Since very few USA citizens are allowed to visit Iran, this delegation of Americans had a rare opportunity to see the diverse geography of Iran and to engage in informal conversations with ordinary Iranian citizens about their lives. Dr. Stanley Rich received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Alabama and has been teaching at USC Aiken since 1979. He regularly teaches composition courses and survey of British Literature. His specialty field is linguistics which includes USCA courses in English Grammar, Development of the English Language, Introduction to Human Language, and Topics in Linguistics. Other courses include Classical Mythology, Chaucer, and Introduction to Peace Studies. In 1993-94, he held a Fulbight Teaching Award at Adam Mickiewitz University in Poznan, Poland. Later, he taught summer courses at Vytautas Magnus University, Kanunas, Lithuania, and at Tula State University, Tula, Russia. He has published numerous articles in the fields of linguistics, composition pedagogy, and social justice. |
