In January 2007, thirty thousand Guineans marched in the streets of the capital city of Conakry in solidarity with trade unions to peacefully protest corruption, rising costs of food, and lack of electricity in 80 percent of Guinea households. Master drummer Amara Camara and visiting drumming student Toni Jones of Columbia, SC, became witnesses to the inspiring events of a people rising up against oppression. Over 130 people were killed and thousands wounded by security forces in Conakry as the general populace joined the trade unions to demand economic and social justice for all citizens of Guinea. The Carolina Peace Resource Center invites you to join us for Guinea Night in our ongoing series to raise awareness of African justice and peace issues.
