Professor Brian Helmuth of the USC faculty will address the effects of climate and climate change on the physiology and ecology of marine organisms at the April 21 meeting of the Sierra Club's John Bachman Group. Dr. Helmuth's research is designed to predict where the effects of climate change are likely to be the most severe, a method of 'ecological triage.' The goal is to locate sites that can be 'saved' through effective management (e.g. through alleviation of pollution stress or over-fishing), or to identify sites that will most likely remain healthy enough to serve as Marine Protected Areas. The John Bachman Group meets on the third Monday every month at 7:30 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on the corner of Heyward and Woodrow Streets in the Shandon neighborhood in Columbia. The general public is welcome. For those interested in having a bite to eat prior to the meeting, a light supper will be served beginning at 6:30 PM. A small donation is requested. Helmuth's work has shown some surprising results, and suggests that unless we know where and when to look for impacts of climate change, many early impacts could go unnoticed. He will discuss the applicability of ecological forecasting techniques for predicting shifts in species distributions in coastal ecosystems, and as a means of linking science to policy-making decisions, to better prepare for the future. Dr. Helmuth received his PhD in 1997 from the University of Washington in Seattle, and spent two years as a post-doctoral research associate at Stamford, 1997-1999. Since 1999, he has served on the faculty at the University of South Carolina, where he is currently an Associate Professor in the Dept of Biological Science, the Marine Sciences Program, and the School of the Environment. Helmuth is a Fellow of the Aldo Leopold Leadership program and in 2003 was named Marine educator of the Year by the South Carolina Marine educators association.
