South Carolina Electric and Gas and Santee Cooper are targetting the Jenkinsville community for two new 1,170 MW nuclear reactors at the VC Summer station (which currently operates one reactor). SCE&G and Santee Cooper are ready and willing to sacrifice the beautiful people and land of Jenkinsville for the supposedly voracious energy demands of their rate payers (so south carolinians from Columbia and Aiken to Charleston and Beaufort). One small community stands on the front lines of dirty energy decisions being made by utilities completely removed from the reality and implications of their proposed expansion of VC Summer.

For years, the people of Jenkinsville have been ignored by the utilities that control so much of their lives, but this summer youth from across the Carolinas are sitting down in kitchens, in living rooms and on front porches to listen to the concerns, feelings and opinions of community members. Young leaders from the Southern Energy Network and the Carolina Peace Resource Center are asking questions and listening, just listening.

The stories you'll hear are painful, poignant and to be treasured. With every door that opens to us, so do the lives and histories of a people frustrated by their perceived isolation and inability to direct their own lives. But every door lends a new voice to a harmony of discontent and desire for action. And slowly the power grows from each voice and a collective voice that resounds in every concern and opinion we hear.

So join amazing youth leaders from the southeast for a long weekend in Jenkinsville where you'll learn how to listen (because amazingly enough, it's a skill we need to be taught) and get to meet the awe-inspiring community members who are poised to take control of their lives and challenge the utilities that have relied on their disempowerment for so long!
