SCE&G has applied for permits to build two nuclear power plants near Jenkinsville, SC, at the Summer Nuclear Power Plant site. The Public Service Commission of SC must approve the application before they begin construction. Members of the public, including residents in Jenkinsville and the surrounding area, have raised a number of concerns about the construction:
1.  Health risks associated with nuclear power and safe waste disposal
2.  Water use for cooling the reactors, at a time when water resources are threatened
3.  Degradation of our source of drinking water from the Broad River
3.  Increased rates required for the public to underwrite the new facility
4.  Verification of SCE&G's predictions of future electricity needs
5.  Energy conservation education and efficiency incentives as an alternative to construction of new nuclear facilities

Even if you cannot attend the meeting, please consider writing a short letter of protest about this pre-construction phase, and its lack of public input.  Letters should be received 24 hours prior to the session, if possible, and signed faxes are acceptable.  The FAX number to use at the PSC is 803-896-5231.

There is an August 20 deadline for submitting requests to intervene at the hearing which is set for the week of Oct. 27.  An insert in the June electric bill explains what to do.  I couldn't find a copy of the insert nor SCE&G's application, which is supposed to be at the PSC website.  However, I located the page for this docket, #2008-196-E, with lots of letters.  If you haven't already written a letter, please consider doing so!  Here's the link to read the letters:

According to the SCE&G June insert, intervention letters must refer to Docket No. 2008-196-E and be sent to the following addresses by August 20, 2008:
