Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina three years ago, New Orleans Common Ground Relief arose as an organization of neighbors helping neighbors, first responders providing one another with direct assistance. Carolina Peace, as well as its
own neighbors, responded in solidarity with these survivors through monetary and other contributions. We must maintain this response as Common Ground Relief continues to rebuild homes and advocate for neighbors with one voice. In the wake of Hurricane Gustav, people in New Orleans still need our support, as do particular communities West of the City, such as the Houma Nation. Common Ground Relief is calling on volunteers with the following skills: trained medics disaster and emergency response independent media tree-cutters those who volunteered in the Gulf Coast region following Hurricane Katrina Interested volunteers with these experience/skills are particularly encouraged to complete an online application. If you have other skills that you believe may be useful to the relief effort, please email commongroundvolunteers[at]gmail.com If your skills lie in areas other than those listed above, and are less applicable to immediate on the ground assistance, but you wish to assist in the ongoing recovery of the Gulf Coast region in the wake of Hurricane Gustav, we still need your help. Please consider holding a fundraising and awareness event in your community in order to raise funds to support Common Ground Relief's efforts in the Gulf Coast as well as your local groups supporting survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Common Ground Relief is presently planning how best to assist the residents of the Gulf Coast Region recover from the effects of Hurricane Gustav. In the coming days we will continue to provide updates as to our plans to support the residents not only of New Orleans, but also to communities to the west of us in areas such as Houma in the clean up and rebuilding effort.
