Last Wednesday, March 16th, a coalition of 30 organizations, led by thge CPRC, introduced a resolution to the Columbia City Council. This resolution proposed that the City of Columbia protect our civil liberties and report yearly on how the Patriot Act is affecting the city (the resolution is available to see at http://www.carolinapeace.org/index.php/pt/3/351/c/12 ).

This was after over a year of planning, gaining sponsors and talking with council members and the mayor. A similar resolution has passed in 371 municipalities and 4 states.

Please let City Council know that you, like so many people in Columbia, are concerned about our civil liberties and how the Patriot Act affects Columbia. Let them know that for you it is a local issue, which demands attention from local government. Let them know that our civil liberties are as important an issue as zoning abatements and street closings. Our coalition includes the South Carolina NAACP, the South Carolina AFL-CIO and the South Carolina ACLU, Planned Parenthood South Carolina, Fairshare, the leadership of USC student government, the Islamic Center of Columbia and many other organizations. The memberships of these groups make up a sizable percentage of the people of Columbia. Politely let them City Council know this.
