Concerned citizens and activists against the transport and use of
plutonium will rally in Marion Square on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
to express opposition to Department of Energy plans to ship plutonium
fuel through Charleston.

The color event will include a news update on the delay in the arrival of
a plutonium shipment into South Carolina (via the Charleston Naval
Weapons Station), banners and signs, various speakers on the issue,
poetry, and highly a decorated "Stop Plutonium" truck.

It has been confirmed that the plutonium shipment has been delayed
and it is believed that the ships are simply waiting off the coast, at
great expense to US taxpayers. The weapons-grade plutonium fuel
(mixed oxide, MOX) on board one of the ships (Pacific Pintail) can not
be off loaded and shipped to the Catawba nuclear reactor due to lack
of verification by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that
security requirements at the site have been met. The license issued
by the NRC to test the MOX contains several conditions which Duke
Power has yet to meet.

"Premature shipment of the plutonium fuel underscores the nature of
the plutonium disposition program - that it is poorly planned and
presents security risks which have not been properly addressed," said
Tom Clements of Greenpeace International.
