Ways to Respond to the Tabling

of House Bill 3143:

Many in South Carolina and around the Nation are outraged by both the tabling of House Bill 3143 and the comments made in an interview with Kara Gormley of WIS-TV by Representative John Graham Altman.

We encourage you to take action to help let our legislators know how you feel. Here are some suggested actions to take:

  • Contact the Chair of the Judiciary Committee, as well as other members of the Judiciary
  • Contact Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter in Support of continuing legislation and appreciation for her efforts
  • Contact Representative John Graham Altman

Possible Talking Points:

  • Recognize that South Carolina has consistently been in the top 10 of women killed by men each year according to the Violence Policy Resource Center (see below)
  • Reiterate that we need a comprehensive response to Domestic Violence
  • Emphasize both the importance of listening to women who have been abused and holding batterers accountable in legislation and in the media and public discourse
  • Emphasize that you would like to see your legislator take leadership in addressing this issue
  • Ask your legislator to join us for the Speak Out April 27th at 1pm on the North Side of the Statehouse
