Letter for Tom Clements
Dear Comrades, Renegades, Associates & Friends -----
When our Department of Energy submitted it's budget request to Congress in February, they stated that "site preparation" would begin on the Savannah River Site MOX plant in May 2005. Obviously, those of us who are concerned about this wasteful and dangerous program should be there to monitor what those so-called public servants are doing when they direct work crews to crank up the chain saws and start driving the dozers around in front of the TV cameras and dignitaries (including, no doubt, the esteemed mayor of New Ellington).
Well, May has arrived but I haven't heard anything about the dog & pony show they may be planning. I wouldn't be surprised if there were delays in this PR activity, a parallel activity of which would also take place at the Russian MOX site at Tomsk.
While it may simply be an irritant (though fitting in with an activist's second goal - causing trouble for those who deserve it), I urge each of you to request to be present for whatever ceremony it is that they may be planning. The head of DOE's National Nuclear Security Adminsitration at SRS is Sterling Franks and he needs to hear from us. Those of you who have gone on recent SRS tours will recall this gentleman, the one who refused to answer questions when we stopped at the MOX site.
So, please e-mail him at

and ask to be invited to the MOX plant "site preparation" activities at the site. While he will likely ignore your message we will at least be able to tell the media that we, the concerned public, requested to be present and they ignored our requests, further underscoring the closed nature of the event. Please let us know if you get any response to your request.
OK, I admit that being at this event and not saying or doing something would require utmost constraint but, as Bruce Cockburn in his song "Call it Democracy" says, it would be yet another surreal, though perhaps fun, reality check to....
"See the paid-off local bottom feeders
passing themselves off as leaders
kiss the ladies shake hands with the fellows
open for business like a cheap bordello" (called SRS)....
Also, if we are able to learn the date and time of their activity it would be worth considering a wee news event just outside SRS in order to give the media an opportunity for a different opinion. Would any of you be interested in such an activity?
And, a request for a site tour in June to witness what they have done at the MOX plant site will be appropriate as well.
