WUSC, 90.5fm: Activism on the Local Airwaves

Tired of Clear Channel? Well, support a local radio station that will spend one full day this week talking about and playing music that honors or inspires activism! Local radio station WUSC, 90.5fm, will be holding their bi-annual fundraising week from Sunday, April 2nd through Saturday, April 8th. For those who don't know, WUSC is the University of South Carolina's radio station that is anything but normal. Shows range from hip-hop to punk, to country, to rhythm and blues.

Now, if that alone weren't enough to get you to tune in and pledge some dough, there is an extra special reason to tune in this Saturday. See, they usually have a different themes each fundraising go-round. The theme for this week's fundraising is DIY (Do-It-Yourself). Each day, the DJs for the widely-varied and unique shows will focus on a specific do-it-yourself category. One day features food, while another will focus on arts and crafts. And, that alone should be reason enough for some of us, but WUSC has gone one step further: Saturday, April 8th, they will focus on a topic near and dear to our CPRC hearts: Activism. How great is that??? All day, the DJs will be spinning discs that will tug at our issues-educating, justice-promoting, and peace-minded hearts... the thing we "do-it-ourselves"!!

As an added bonus, Uncle Gram will welcome CPRC volunteer Heather McCalman to The Red Bank Bar & Grill show from 9am-12pm. For the first two hours, Uncle Gram will spin discs that harken back to our historical activism roots, from the Boston Tea Party through the Civil Rights Movement. For the last hour, Heather will mix contemporary tunes that speak to the issues currently facing our world with a couple of her original poems. How did she get this privilege, to DJ for an hour on her favorite WUSC show? By pledging at least $100 during the last fundraiser.

So, for a lively way start your day this Saturday, tune in to The Red Bank Bar & Grill Show at 90.5fm! To promote the future of local radio or to get your own hour to DJ on the radio ($100), pledge some money to the hard-working radio souls by calling 803.576.9872.
