Call if you need a ride to one or both of the sessions, or if you can help provide rides.
The DOE presentations will be long and interesting (!?!) focussing on
"ramping up" the nuclear weapons production in the USA. One of the key
issues is a new plutonium pit (or trigger) factory that insiders assume
would be built at the Savannah River Site (other sites are also being
considered). SRS is a frontrunner since the nation's "surplus"
plutonium is already there...and now there are also plans for
reprocessing high-level radioactive waste (irradiated fuel) which
results in further separation of plutonium. There will also be
discussion of an expanded operation of Y-12, in Oak Ridge, TN where
nuclear warheads (pits plus all the other parts) are assembled.
