Hearings in North Augusta, November 9th

Where: North Augusta, South Carolina, at the North Augusta Community Center, 495 Brookside Avenue.

When: Thursday November 9, 2006, there will be two sessions (the same) from 11 a.m.--3 p.m., and 6 p.m.--10 p.m

Call if you need a ride to one or both of the sessions, or if you can help provide rides.

The DOE presentations will be long and interesting (!?!) focussing on "ramping up" the nuclear weapons production in the USA. One of the key issues is a new plutonium pit (or trigger) factory that insiders assume would be built at the Savannah River Site (other sites are also being considered). SRS is a frontrunner since the nation's "surplus" plutonium is already there...and now there are also plans for reprocessing high-level radioactive waste (irradiated fuel) which results in further separation of plutonium. There will also be discussion of an expanded operation of Y-12, in Oak Ridge, TN where nuclear warheads (pits plus all the other parts) are assembled.

Does this sound like economic development to you? For who? What happened to living up to our part of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty? Other nations of the world might be inspired to take this Treaty more seriously if the USA did!

Please make it to attend this vital public meeting and get there early to sign in and get in line to speak your mind (South Carolina and DOE usually team up to ensure that dissenters have to wait a long time to speak...so bring your patience!)

There is also opportunity to comment in writing -- see the federal register notices available at the links below (same document, two formats) -- BUT WE NEED PEOPLE TO COME IN PERSON if at all possible!
