Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist and poet, logged onto his computer and
sent an email. Eight months later, he was arrested and sentenced to 10
years in jail. Click here to demand his release.
In April 2004, Shi Tao sent an email to a U.S.-based pro-democracy
website. In his email, he summarized a government order directing media
organizations in China to downplay the 15th anniversary of the 1989
Tiananmen Square massacre. Police arrested him and charged him with
"illegally providing state secrets to foreign entities." Authorities
used email account holder information supplied by Yahoo! to convict and
sentence him to 10 years in prison, where he is laboring in harsh
conditions and has inadequate access to medical care.
