AMAZONES, WOMEN MASTER DRUMMERS, is a performance ensemble comprised of accomplished singers, dancers and percussionists from Guinea, West Africa. In a roaring spectacle of power and virtuosity, the women perform their country’s traditional repertoire, emanating a graceful proficiency that clearly differs from the masculine drumming style. The djembe in Guinea is an instrument historically reserved for male players. AMAZONES is a daring response to antiquated taboos that stretch back thousands of years. Through their powerful, energetic and grandiose performance, AMAZONES, WOMEN MASTER DRUMMERS hopes to bridge cultural and gender gaps through a spirit of celebration, music and dance.
