The Agriculture Environmental Affairs I Subcommittee will meet on Tuesday 3/6/07 in the Blatt Building in room 410 at 2:30 p.m. to discuss H3545, a bill that would do away with the Atlantic Compact legislation of 2000. This legislation, which was a compromise agreed upon by the state of SC, Barnwell County, SC utilities and the operators of the Barnwell low level radioactive waste landfill, would allow Barnwell to accept waste from South Carolina, Connecticut and New Jersey. Energy Solutions of Utah bought the site in 2006 and has since decided to press SC legislators to overturn the current law. Energy Solutions wants to keep Barnwell open to the rest of the nation's low level radioactive waste.
