We need your help to DUMP THE BILL and defeat big industry that wants to bring more out-of-state nuclear waste into SC. The House Agriculture Subcommittee (Rep. Jeff Duncan-Chair, Paul Agnew, Joan Brady, Robert Brown, David Umphlett) will meet Tuesday, March 6 at 2:30 in Blatt Room 410 on H.3545. This meeting has been scheduled earlier than expected so we have to move very quickly to respond/prepare. Not everyone in attendance will be able to testify, but we definitely want to PACK the room with concerned conservationists opposing the bill.

We need to be sure to stay on message with 3 primary points (More background information in the attachment):

  1. The nuclear waste buried at the Barnwell Low Level Nuclear Waste site is more dangerous than it sounds.
  2. Nothing has changed since the Atlantic Compact law of 2000 except that Energy Solutions bought the Chem-Nuclear Barnwell operation and now wants to change the rules.
  3. When the CURRENT LAW was passed in 2000, all stakeholders agreed to a compromise which benefits South Carolina's citizens and its own nuclear power industry.

If you cannot attend the hearing in Columbia on Tuesday, please call or email your representative , esp. if he/she serves on the Agriculture Committee, and encourage him/her to UPHOLD THE CURRENT LAW and say NO to H.3545! Contact information for House members can be found here: http://www.scstatehouse.net/html-pages/housebios.html

Names of the Subcommittee members who will be meeting Tuesday are in bold:

House Agriculture, Natural Resources & Environmental Affairs
(Barnwell / Atlantic Compact)

Billy Witherspoon, ( C h air) Mac Toole, 1st V.C . David Hiott, 2nd V.C .

Joan Brady, Secy . Paul Agnew Robert Brown

Jeff Duncan Marion Frye Laurie Funderburk

Nelson Hardwick Kenneth Hodges Patsy Knight

Dwight Loftis Phillip Lowe Harold Mitchell, Jr.

Michael Pitts David Umphlett, Jr. Ted Vick

Supporting the current law is a top priority of South Carolina's conservation community. Please help spread the word so we can have a BIG crowd lobbying that day and at the hearing!

Lobby Team Day

WHEN: Tuesday, Mar. 6th

11:00 a.m. – approx. 3:30 p.m.

(Stay as long as you like.)

WHERE: Meet at the Nickelodeon Theatre, the movie theatre (next door to the old meeting place, Immaculate Consumption coffee shop) on the corner of South Main and Pendleton Streets (behind the State House, directly across the street). You can park on the street at a green 2-hr. meter, or in one of two parking garages (located at Lady/Assembly or Gervais/Sumter.)

HOW: We'll review the top legislative issues for the week before going to the State House. Our conservation lobbyists will fully explain the current bills. You are NOT expected to be an expert on the issues, and just finding out what questions legislators have is helpful even if you can't address all their concerns. The message of the conservation community is most effective when you chat with your legislator one-on-one. Help us increase accountability in the General Assembly to protect SC's environment and ensure a healthy future for our families.

If anyone from the Charleston area is interested in carpooling, please contact Cornelia Carrier at this email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Please reply to this email if you plan to attend. We'd love to have you, and bring a friend. (BUSINESS ATTIRE)
