(1100 S. Holly Street) In June 2006 we began our second garden project at the Ben Arnold Center
through a partnership with the Rosewood Community Council and the Boys and Girls Club. During seven weekly summer workshops we learned about the growth cycle of plants, the process of composting, animal life in the garden, and more! The Rosewood/Ben Arnold Community Garden now has a flower bed next to the driveway and, waiting for vegetable planting, a rich bed behind the building. The vegetable bed is framed by young blueberry bushes on one side, and a pine forest on the other.
Thanks to creativity and enthusiasm on the part of Karlaan, Cassandra, and Andrew, we were able to work with some 25 children over a period of about seven weeks and made lots of friends. As part of our workshops with the children we started a flower garden at the entrance of the building; on a Sat. in July about seven volunteers created two permaculture mounds for a vegetable garden out back.
In the fall Lori and Karlaan made a soil enrichment plan. Bright and early Sat. Nov. 18 Mike tilled the overgrown mounds behind the Ben Arnold Center to create individual family plots.
December featured a flower planting session with the children; in January Lori and Karlaan planted flower bulbs with the young gardeners.
The first Saturday of March Jason M., Jason C., Clint, and Lori planted 16 blueberry bushes around the back vegetable plot.
A limited number of plots are available to members of the general public for individual organic vegetable beds. Leave a message for Karlaan at 803-I-GOCPRC if you are interested in helping to lead summer educational workshops or in maintaining your own vegetable bed.
