July 10, 5:30pm: What you need to know about pending Hate Crimes Legislation (AFFA Program Meeting), Renaissance Charleston Hotel, 68 Wentworth St. Meet the legislators sponsoring it and community leaders supporting it. Hear from the family of Sean Kennedy, who died in May after being assaulted because he was gay, and find out what one family is doing to turn tragedy into hope.
With Hate Crimes legislation on the horizon in both the federal and state legislatures, we are already being bombarded by the religious right: hate crimes legislation is nothing more than another item to be checked off on the "gay agenda." Find out what is at the heart of hate crimes legislation and who is protected under it. Related viewing: Thousands of people are attacked every year because of their sexual orientation, and there's still no federal hate crimes law to protect them. Please watch this video from HRC: http://www.hrc.org/FightHate.
