Giant Oreos Make Civics Lesson Digestible; Cookies Used to Explain How the People of South Carolina Want Federal Taxes Spent

Vehicle Designed by Ben of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream

You might think giant Oreo cookies would give kids a big tummy ache. But the giant Oreos aboard the OreoMobile—coming to historic downtown Charleston at the Unitarian Church—actually explain how to make South Carolina kids healthier. Using giant Oreos as props, OreoMobile actors will dramatize in a 10-minute show how America can provide health insurance for the 102,595 South Carolina kids who lack it. Here’s what else the OreoMobile illustrates: If the Pentagon trims $60 billion currently wasted on useless weapons, not only could the U.S. begin reducing the deficit, and help millions of starving children in impoverished countries around the world, but the states also would receive enough money to make local dreams come true.Proportionately, South Carolina would receive $500 million every year, enough money to 1) provide health insurance to all 102,000 kids in the state who don’t have it, 2) renovate and modernize all of South Carolina’s K-12 schools over ten years, 3) offer job training to South Carolina workers who were laid off by large companies and 4) create thousands of high paying jobs in alternative energy industries. Most Americans, including those in South Carolina, want their taxes spent the way the OreoMobile illustrates, according to recent polling by the Program on International Policy Attitudes. See, http://65.109.167.118/pipa/pdf/mar05/FedBudget_Mar05_rpt.pdf Canceling Pentagon weapons systems designed to fight the collapsed Soviet Union is not being weak on defense,” said Ben Cohen. “It is rebuilding our schools, providing health care for our kids, training our workforce for decent jobs, reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and creating a good quality of life for all of us.” Cohen is now President of Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities which sponsors the OreoMobile. Cohen is undertaking this project on behalf of Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities and not on behalf of Ben & Jerry's. For more information, including photos of the OreoMobile, visit www.SensiblePriorities.org Aaron Rubin, OreoMobile driver, explains how South Carolina can provide health coverage to all its uninsured kids, renovate and modernize every K-12 public school over ten years, offer job training to workers who were laid off by large companies last year and reduce the Federal deficit. All of this —and more— can be done by trimming waste from the Pentagon budget. Why is the federal budget a moral document? Come to church and find out!

The OreoMobile, a 13 foot tall stack of giant gravity defying Oreo cookies that show the federal budget in ways everybody can understand, rolls into Charleston on Sunday, July 8th at 11:30 am for an event before at the downtown Charleston Unitarian Church, 4 Archdale Street. In a rollicking demonstration throwing caution to the wind, performer Aaron Rubin actually climbs on top of the tallest stack representing the $500 billion Pentagon budget and removes 6 of the $10 billion dollar confections that currently fund obsolete Cold-War era weapons systems. He then “spends” them the way polling shows most Americas want, on children’s health care, K-12 education, energy independence, medical research and deficit reduction that would provide insurance for every kid, rebuild all our public schools and reduce in ten years, America’s use of oil by half. The Priorites! Campaign would bring $500 million every year to South Carolina alone, without raising a dime in local, state or federal taxes.

Designed by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, the OreoMobile’s $10 billion dollar giant Oreos are part of the Priorites! Campaign of Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities comprised of 700 Fortune 500 and other executives along with retired Admirals and Generals on
the Military Advisory Board.

The OreoMobile is on a 6-week whirlwind tour of South Carolina before heading cross-country to Nevada.

Very truly,

Aaron Rubin
