Green Action Film Series Explores
"Manufactured Landscapes"
Thursday Nov. 20, 7:00 pm ~ GQLC
These are
“action films” in the sense that they can inspire you to take an active
role in addressing important issues. Our upcoming installment takes a
look at interesting ways the human impact can be depicted in artwork.
"Manufactured
Landscapes" is the striking new documentary on the world and work of
renowned artist Edward Burtynsky. Internationally acclaimed for his
large-scale photographs of "manufactured landscapes"--quarries, recycling yards,
factories, mines and dams--Burtynsky
creates stunningly beautiful art from civilization’s materials and debris. The
film follows him through China, as he shoots the evidence and effects
of that country's massive industrial revolution. With breathtaking
sequences, such as the opening tracking shot through an almost endless
factory, the filmmakers also extend the narratives of Burtynsky's
photographs, allowing us to meditate on our impact on the planet and
witness both the epicenters of industrial endeavor and the dumping
grounds of its waste.
Following the film we will have a discussion on art and action:
the role of the artist in social change. The discussion panel will
include local photographers as well as scholars who take an
“eco-critical” look at art and literature.

 It's comfortable to blame George W. Bush entirely for the Iraq War but, as Nixon used to say, "It would be wrong." Recall that at the outset of the war, the Germans said "no," the French said "no," and the Canadians said "no." Three out of four of our closest allies ain't bad, but it ain't good enough. The conventional wisdom is that Bush bullied Tony Blair and the British into going along with us. I don't believe it for a moment. The British have been diddling in the Middle East since long before Larry of Arabia. I went to graduate school with a former RAF pilot who was so proud of his World War II service and at the same time so ashamed of his bombing of the Jews in 1948.

 All signs point to Ethiopia soon ending its nearly two-year occupation of Somalia, a U.S.-instigated aggression that led to "Africa's worst humanitarian crisis." Once the Ethiopians are gone, the author believes it is inevitable that Islamist forces will be part of the new order. "The Islamists have an unmatched record of public service. They operated schools, hospitals, and for six months before the occupation removed every checkpoint in Mogadishu and brought a semblance of peace." 27, has been halted, so that attorneys can file a law suit based on the
claim that he is innocent of the murder for which he was sentenced to
death.

West African Drum and Dance Classes |

Master drummer, Amara Camara, will be teaching drum lessons on Sunday afternoons from 2:30-3:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Columbia. The cost is $10 per class, $8 for students. Beautiful West African drums are provided. The drum classes/drum circle are so much fun! You do not have to commit to a certain number of classes - just let us know if you are coming so we can have a drum there for you.
Those who want to observe class are welcome.
In addition, West African dance classes will be taught from 4-5:30 pm. Dancers will be accompanied by traditional West African drumming. The classes are geared for all levels to grasp and understand. The cost is $10 per class, $8 for students. Experience the rich culture of West Africa in dance and drum!

The money from the classes will be used to buy rice for the people of the Ratoma neighborhood in Conakry, Guinea, West Africa. The people of Guinea have a vibrant artistic culture that they enjoy sharing with others. Unfortunately, Guinea is one of the poorest countries in Africa, where people live on less than $1 per day. With the worldwide rise in fuel prices, many Guinea families now eat only every other day.
Come to drum class today and be energized by this beautiful musical tradition while helping our brothers and sisters in West Africa.
