New Nuclear Reactors: the Death of the Broad River?
SCE&G’s two new planned nuclear reactors at V.C. Summer in Jenkinsville would intake, according to SCE&G's own numbers, 54.9 million gallons daily (MGD) from the Broad river and discharge 14.6 MGD. That amounts to 40.3 MGD up in steam to cool the nuclear reactor, not to mention the fact that water discharged back to the Broad will be a super-heated 95 degrees. This increase in the Broad's already rising temperature will likely be the tipping point to extinction for animal and plant life both in the Broad and downstream. In a time of water scarcity we cannot allow 40 MGD of our Broad river to be sacrificed for nuclear power.

Carolina Peace sent two activists to attend the Know Nukes Y'all Summit Thurs Jun 28-Sat Jun 30th in Chattanooga, TN, joining our stalwart SC activists Tom Clements (Alliance for Nuclear Accountability) and Susan Corbett (SC Sierra Club). David Matos, president of Carolina Peace, wrote this Report Back blog for NuclearFreePlanet.org while Action South's blog also gives a good overview (and more pictures) of the conference. Lansing, MI's Peace Education Center took some wonderful photos including the thumbnail photo collage here on the Carolina Peace webpage. The conference was a watershed moment in opposing nuclear weapons and energy in the Southeast.

The 60 Minutes story "Christians in the Holyland" by Bob Simon aired on Sunday April 22nd finally broke the Main Stream Media's silence on the plight of Palestinian Christians under Israeli Occupation. Tellingly, the Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren objected to the story before it was even aired or anyone had seen it. Why do the Israelis not want Americans to hear about Christians in the Holyland? Because they are Palestinian Arab Christians and they are suffering under Israeli rule. Listen to the voices of the Palestinian Christians.

Billed as an “Energy Independence” plan, Sen. Lindsey Graham and Rep. Jeff Duncan (SC-3) announced the introduction of legislation opening the Atlantic Coast, including South Carolina’s coast, to off-shore oil drilling at a 5 Points press conference sponsored by the SC Energy Forum, a front group for the American Petroleum Institute. Carolina Peace, having caught wind of press conference, organized a counter-protest to oppose the special interest energy agenda at the 5 Points Fountain, the original location of the press conference, which was moved across the street to Saluda’s. Gov. Nikki Haley and Rep. Joe Wilson were in attendance at the press conference as were leading S.C. environmentalists who questioned the plan.
"Sen. Lindsey Graham's Plan Would Open S.C. Coast to Offshore Drilling," the State paper.
Off Shore Wind, Not Off Shore Oil: This blog post from SACE (the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy) shows why wind power is a better fit for South Carolina.

March 13th marked three years since American non-violent activist Tristan Anderson was severely injured when an Israeli fired tear gas cannister struck him in the head. Unfortunately, this was no accident, but part of a pattern of by the IDF of irresponsibly using disproportionate and lethal force in dealing with non-violent demonstrations by firing tear gas AT protesters and at close range. Two Palestinian non-violent protesters have been killed in this way, Bassem Abu Rahman of Bil'in who was shot in the chest at close range and Mustafa Tamimi of Nabi Saleh who was shot in the face with a tear gas cannister at close range.
