In this easy-to-read volume of FAQs, analysts Wildman and Bennis examine a wide range of key issues regarding the U.S. war in Afghanistan. What was the history of the U.S. in Afghanistan before September 11? What role does NATO play in the Afghanistan war? Do Afghans want the U.S. troops to stay in their country? Who are the Taliban? What is al-Qaeda? What are the steps needed to end the war?

"Hope or hopelessness, trapped or free, emigrating or remaining in Gaza, ignored or noticed by the world, Israel held accountable for possible war crimes (along with militant political elements in Gaza) or will the impunity continue?—these questions constitute the main themes of my new photographic presentation about Gaza. Based on my work photographing and teaching photography for one month in Gaza during the summer of 2009, my 4th trip to that sorely afflicted region, I portray how conditions have deteriorated. Hope for many has disappeared. People, especially those young or moderate, have no voice and often attempt to leave, only a few successfully. While others remain, like the steadfast—sumud is the Arabic word—Dr. Mona Al Farra and others I profile in my latest show." - Skip Schiel

October 14, 2009 This year has seen a dramatic shift in American Jews' attitudes toward Israel. In January many liberal Jews were shocked by the Gaza war, in which Israel used overwhelming force against a mostly defenseless civilian population unable to flee. Then came the rise to power of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, whose explicitly anti-Arab platform was at odds with an American Jewish electorate that had just voted 4 to 1 for a minority president. Throw in angry Israelis writing about the "rot in the Diaspora," and it's little wonder young American Jews feel increasingly indifferent about a country that has been at the center of Jewish identity for four decades. Carolina Peace Resource Center is promoting Ramadan charity activities as part of an effort to promote peace through understanding.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During Ramadan, Muslims throughout the world fast from food and beverage each day from sunrise to sunset. Following the daily fast, families and friends eat together as part of the observance. The fasting is connected closely with a focus on spiritual purification, humility, devotion, charity, and reading of the Qur’an.
As part of the charity efforts that are part of Ramadan, Carolina Peace Resource Center is coordinating the first annual South Carolina Ramadan food drive to benefit Harvest Hope Food Bank. The purpose of the food dirve is to increase the public's awareness of the role of charity in Islam, to highlight the generous nature of Muslims in South Carolina, and to facilitiate a means in which Muslims in South Carolina can pariticipate in this important pillar of Islam. Participating organizations include Masjid Al‐Muslimiin (Islamic Center of Columbia), Masjid Noor Al‐Huda, Weekend Islamic School, Madrasatul Muslimiin, Masjid and Islamic Center of Clemson, Harvest Hope Food Bank, and Carolina Peace Resource Center.
Attached is a flyer promoting the drive which also includes a shopping list if you would like to participate.
