Dunham, a federal public defender from eastern Virginia, who is also representing the "dirty bomb" suspect, Jose Padilla, will focus on the importance of preserving due process and the rights of citizens while protecting national security.

Hamdi, age 24 the son of a petroleum engineer, was born in Baton Rouge, La. and grew up in Saudi Arabia, his parents' native country. In December 2001, Hamdi was captured in Afghanistan and turned over to the U.S. forces by the Northern Alliance. In January he was transferred to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. When authorities discovered that he was a U.S. citizen, he was transferred to the Navy brig in Norfolk, Va. In August 2003, the Navy transferred Hamdi to the naval brig in Charleston, where re remained until his release in October. Dunham negotiated the terms of Hamdi's release after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on June 28, 2004. The decision upholds the right of the President to detain citizens as "enemy combatants," but declares that prisoners may not be held indefinitely without being charged with a crime and the opportunity to challenge the merits of their captivity.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies at USC.
