You need JavaScript enabled to view it PRESS ADVISORY APRIL 6, 2005 CONTACTS: Louis Zeller (336) 982-2691 office, (704) 756-7550 cell Jerry Rudolph (803) 238-1418 GROUPS TO CALL ON STATE TO DEMAND TERRORISM SAFEGUARDS AT COLUMBIA PRESS CONFERENCE On Thursday, April 7th the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, the Carolina Peace Resource Center, Georgians Against Nuclear Energy and other southeastern groups will hold a press conference near the Governor's Mansion in Columbia. The conference will take place at 12:00 Noon at the corner of Richland and Gadsden streets. Group representatives will release documents in their ongoing efforts to prevent the arrival of plutonium fuel shipments to the Catawba nuclear station in York County. The League has petitioned state officials to prevent plutonium shipments until Duke has complied with recent Nuclear Regulatory Commission security requirements. The backdrop for the press event will be a 20 foot long mock nuclear transport cask. The League challenged Duke's application for an exemption from Nuclear Regulatory Commission security regulations, rules which increased the level of protection required to defend against the more aggressive assaults predicted after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As a result, on March 10, 2005 the NRC issued the license with conditions which must be implemented before Duke can accept the plutonium fuel. -end- Photo opportunity We apologize for the short notice for this event.
