On Thursday, April 7th the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, the
Carolina Peace Resource Center, Georgians Against Nuclear Energy and
other southeastern groups will hold a press conference near the
Governor's Mansion in Columbia. The conference will take place at 12:00
Noon at the corner of Richland and Gadsden streets. Group
representatives will release documents in their ongoing efforts to
prevent the arrival of plutonium fuel shipments to the Catawba nuclear
station in York County.
![]() In Charleston, several groups, including Charleston Peace, Georgians Against Nuclear Energy (GANE) and Greenpeace International, have established a 24-hour watch of the port to monitor arrival of the ship carrying the plutonium fuel. The Pacific Pintail, which will carry the MOX into the Charleston Naval Weapons Station for off-loading, is anticipated to arrive at any time and will pass directly in front of the "beach watch" on Sullivan's Island. Once the plutonium fuel is off-loaded two truck convoys will take place - one of four MOX fuel assermblies to the Catawba reactor near Rock Hill and the other with two assemblies of scrap plutonium to be transported cross-country to the Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratory in New Mexico. Due to the weapons-grade plutonium contained in the fuel, both truck shipments are anticipated to be carried out with large security escorts. For more information on the beach watch in Charleston and tracking of the truck convoys, call Tom Clements of Greenpeace or Glenn Carroll of GANE at 202-319-2411 or 843-883-3881. ![]() BREDL Mock Nuclear Waste Cask The League challenged Duke's application for an exemption from Nuclear Regulatory Commission security regulations, rules which increased the level of protection required to defend against the more aggressive assaults predicted after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As a result, on March 10, 2005 the NRC issued the license with conditions which must be implemented before Duke can accept the plutonium fuel. Add your comment
