Reverse the 'Robbing Hood' Cuts to the Safety Net PDF Print E-mail

When: Nov. 16, Noon

Where: Governor's Mansion

What: Bring signs, wear outfits (Billionaires for Bush? Cops and Robbers?), and bring determination

Our concern for social justice extends to insuring people have the basics: food, shelter, clothing, and access to health care.

As many of you know, under extreme pressure by their constituents, Congress tabled yesterday a federal budget bill that will strip $54 billion from social programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and college federal loans, while it hands out more than $70 billion in tax cuts to the rich. They hope to bring it to the floor next week, once they’ve strong-armed the few holdouts. The time to strike is now.

Dear Columbia Peace Resource Center members,

Our concern for social justice extends to insuring people have the basics: food, shelter, clothing, and access to health care.

As many of you know, under extreme pressure by their constituents, Congress tabled yesterday a federal budget bill that will strip $54 billion from social programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and college federal loans, while it hands out more than $70 billion in tax cuts to the rich. They hope to bring it to the floor next week, once they’ve strong-armed the few holdouts. The time to strike is now.

Members of MoveOn.org are trying to stop the passage of this budget by holding “Speak Outs,” press events where people in local communities tell local media outlets about how this bill will negatively impact their lives.

In Columbia:

When: Nov. 16, Noon

Where: Governor's Mansion

What: Bring signs, wear outfits (Billionaires for Bush? Cops and Robbers?), and bring determination

Now imagine the visual: the speakers seated around a Thanksgiving table, with all the plates and silverware, but no food or drink. Signs in the background read, “What Kind of Thanksgiving is This?” or “NO to the Reverse Robin Hood Budget.” The table itself is outside the governor’s mansion and/or the home office of Joe Wilson. That evening and the next day, their stories are covered by TV and radio stations and The State.

The potential rewards are great: we’ll remind the people of South Carolina that their neighbors are going to be hurt by these cuts, and we’ll show the Congress that their constituents are not going to acquiesce quietly to political values that sacrifice the well-being of working Americans to pay back campaign contributors.

If you are interested in helping with such an event, please write or call Tim Liszewski, who is coordinating the “Speak Out” here in Columbia:
