Local groups are organizing a "Listening Project" that will interview Katrina survivors to ask questions that will enable them to express their hopes, fears, needs and concerns in a manner that is respectful and caring.
Volunteer “Listeners” are needed and are required to attend a one-day training Saturday, January 14, 2006, from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM, in the Harbison Room at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, 4201 N. Main St., Columbia. For campus map and directions: www.ltss.edu. In lieu of training fees, each Listener must complete 8 hours of interviews by March 31, 2006. The LISTENING PROJECT is both a conflict resolution and a community building process, involving in-depth interviews using a survey with open-ended questions. Each Listening Project has specific goals to change community attitudes and behavior. What distinguishes this method from more manipulative or coercive approaches is that the LP tries to generate organic change within an individual, rather than imposing change from without by telling people what to believe. The goals of this Listening Project are to enable Katrina survivors to express their hopes, fears, needs and concerns in a manner that is respectful and caring. Our interviews will help survivors:
1. Their Katrina experience B. Give ideas and solutions for effective citizen and civic response to these issues and problems C. Consider involvement in grassroots education and action programs that can address findings of the Listening Project. Teams of two will listen to evacuees. After responses have been gathered from the survey, a report will be done for use as an educational tool. A facilitated dialogue will be held to foster national dialogue, education and action on issues of poverty and racial prejudice that have been raised in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Sponsored by Columbia (SC) Friends Meeting (Quakers), American Friends Service Corporation and supported by Rural Southern Voice for Peace, Columbia Consumer Education Council and S.C. Christian Action Council. This project also is taking place in Atlanta and New Orleans. To register: complete the form and email (
