SPEAK OUT AGAINST PROPOSED NUCLEAR ENERGY PARK IN SOUTH CAROLINA
AUGUST 18, NORTH AUGUSTA, SC
August 12, 2009
Friends in SC, NC and GA,

The Department of Energy wants to make an Energy Park at Savannah River Site (SRS is the nuclear weapons production site, across the Savannah River from Augusta Georgia). This might be a good idea IF the focus were on renewable energy: but so far their secret plan is to build a NUCLEAR ENERGY PARK.

On the list of SRS Energy Park ideas is development of new reprocessing technologies to "recycle" nuclear waste--which means more radioactive contamination, more releases, more "incidental" waste --including liquid waste like that already in tanks at SRS, more worker exposures and higher risk to those living in the area, particularly downriver.

Friends of the Earth in Columbia, South Carolina, is putting out the call:  Department of Energy is holding a meeting on the "energy park" Tuesday, August 18, from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. in North Augusta, SC, at the N. Augsuta Municipal Building, 100 Georgia Ave. We urge you to attend and speak out.
DOE and SRS boosters have been advocating for irradiated fuel storage, reprocessing and "advanced" reactors (to use plutonium from reprocessing) and we need to let DOE know that we do not support dirty new missions at SRS!

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. We need to have a good turnout lest the contractor-backed boosters drown out our voices.  The future of a cleaner SRS depends on us and our participation.
