Health insurance companies treat being a woman as a pre-existing condition.

Tell Congress: "I am not a pre-existing condition!"

Women pay up to 48% more for private health insurance than men for the same policies. This is known as "gender rating," a policy by which health insurers charge women higher premiums - and it's legal in most states. Insurers also routinely deny coverage to women with "pre-existing conditions" - which include pregnancy, c-sections, and in some cases, domestic violence.

The reforms being advanced by the White House and Congress would:

  • Make "gender rating" illegal.
  • Prevent insurance companies from denying care on the basis of pre-existing conditions.
  • End "rescission," or the insurance industry practice of canceling someone's coverage when they get sick.
  • Set limits on out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Provide competition and choice for women in the individual insurance market.
